Aquarium lighting is the term used to describe any type of light, (fluorescent, metal halide, led or other) that is used to light an aquarium. Aquarium lighting can serve only to illuminate the tank or in some instances, such as with reef aquariums, support the life contained within.
Freshwater aquarium lighting often comes in two forms, one is a screw in style incandescent bulb and the other is normal output fluorescent lighting. Screw in compact fluorescent lighting has also become popular in freshwater aquaria since it provides brighter light output then traditional screw in style bulbs. More advanced freshwater set-ups, such as planted freshwater aquariums opt for stronger lighting sources. Power compact fluorescents bulbs as well as high output T5 bulbs and even metal halide lighting is often used over these aquariums to encourage plant growth. While these advanced lighting options provide better sepctrum then traditional forms they often times use more electricity and have a high amount of heat output.
The reef aquarium field is where aquarium lighting varies the greatest. Some reef aquarium keepers use VHO (Very High Output) fluorescent tubes since they provide much brighter light then average fluorescent bulbs and come in a variety of spectrums. Often times reef keepers opt for light of varying spectrum. Since many corals require a deep blue or actinic spectrum of light (7500k) to thrive many aquarists must supplement traditional white light with light of this color. Also popular with reef keepers is T5 High Output fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs are thinner then traditional T8 bulbs and provide a much brighter, more powerful light.
Arguably the most popular light source in reef aquariums today is metal halide lighting. These high output lights closely re-create the shimmering effect of bright tropical sun over a patch of coral reef. Also, these lights can create best true spectrum output. Metal halide bulbs come in a variety of spectrums from 6500k on up to true 20,000k and allow for a variety of light hungry corals to survive under them. Many aquarists will use metal halide bulbs in conjunction with either power compact fluorescents or T5 fluorescents since halide lighting does not have the overall balanced effect of those light types. While very useful to reef aquarium keepers halide lighting also uses a lot of electricity (150-500 watts being common)and produces copious amounts of heat. Most reef keepers mount halide bulbs at least one foot above their tank and some, due to the lights heat output have had to add chillers to keep aquarium water cool.
